KUALA LUMPUR:
A self-employed man was fined RM7,000 by the Sessions Court here today for abusing a dog last year by slashing its legs.

Judge Manira Mohd Nor made the decision after Amir Abd Salim Meor Lope pleaded guilty to an alternative charge under Section 44 (1)(d) of the Animals Act.

He was previously charged under the Animal Welfare Act with causing unnecessary suffering to the dog between Jan 4 and 5, 2019 at Taman Beringin here.

“The prosecution and defence have entered a plea bargain under Section 172A of the Criminal Procedure Code, and all parties have agreed on a proposed fine to be paid,” Manira said.

“If he fails to pay the RM7,000, he has to serve a four-month jail sentence.”

Officers from the Federal Territories Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) had found Amir in the area telling of how he slashed dogs that approached his chicken farm with a parang.

Several days later, DVS officers came across a female dog with injuries to its legs and body. Together with the police, they conducted a search of the chicken farm where they found the parang Amir had used.

The DVS was represented today by prosecuting officer Hasiah Musa while Amir was represented by Chris A Chong.
