GEORGE TOWN:
A police narcotics unit office here was badly damaged in a fire this morning, with nearly half the office space destroyed.

In the 7.50am incident, three fire engines rushed to the scene of the fire on the fourth floor of the northeast district police headquarters at Singgora Lane.

A fire department spokesman said the fire was brought under control in about half an hour and no one was hurt.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said at the time of the incident, all officers were preparing to attend a roll call.

“We are awaiting a fire department investigation report,” he said when contacted.

Soffian said nothing of importance had been destroyed in the fire and advised people against making speculation about anything sinister in the fire.
