KUALA LUMPUR:
Klang MP Charles Santiago left Bukit Aman after spending two hours giving his statement over comments he had made on the Federal Court’s decision in news portal Malaysiakini’s contempt of court case.

It was previously reported that he had been summoned to the federal police headquarters after an NGO in Kedah lodged a police report against him.

Speaking to reporters outside Bukit Aman, Santiago said he was asked 10 questions.

“The police have opened an investigation paper under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.”

He said the police did not disclose which NGO made the report against him or whether he would be called in again.

Besides Santiago, Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan is also being investigated for comments made after the Federal Court found the news portal guilty of contempt.

Santiago previously told FMT that he was exercising his fundamental right to free speech and that he should be able to express his views without fear.

The DAP leader had also said it was his duty to speak out as an MP.

“The Federal Court’s decision was not unanimous. There was a dissenting judgment,” he said, adding that police reports now seemed to be a norm in the country.
