PETALING JAYA:
Police have arrested all the suspects over a fracas outside a temple in Cheras, when it was falsely claimed that the government had tried to demolish the temple.

In a statement, Cheras district police chief Muhammad Idzam Jaafar said a total of 24 suspects, comprising 18 men and six women, were arrested for their involvement in the chaotic scenes outside the temple.

During the fracas on Sept 28, four men aged between 18 and 50 were arrested for blocking a bulldozer and police personnel.

The suspects were remanded for two days from Sept 29 to Sept 30 under Section 148 of the Penal Code for taking part in a riot and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants from performing their duties.

On Sept 29, police arrested another two men aged 38 and 56 years.

Yesterday, at about 1.30am, police surrounded the temple area, but the temple members surrendered and submitted a letter of apology to the police. A total of 12 men and six women, all temple members aged between 18 and 84, were arrested.

However, two suspects were released on police bail due to their age.

“A remand application was made on 18 more suspects. Following the remand application, a total of 10 suspects were remanded for one day on Sept 30 to assist in the investigation,” Idzam said.

He added that a complete investigation paper was submitted to a deputy public prosecutor today with proposed charges under Sections 148, 186 and 353 of the Penal Code and Regulation 17 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2021.

He urged members of the public who have further information on the case to contact investigating officer Mohamad Sukri Ishak at 013-2165881, or contact the nearest police station.

On Sept 28, a video went viral on social media claiming that the Kuala Lumpur Lands and Mines Office had acted to demolish the temple located in the Salak South area.

Idzam explained that the incident happened after several individuals stopped construction work of a hoarding barrier between 11.45am and 4pm.
