MELAKA:
The state assembly unanimously passed the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2022 today to lower the qualifying age for an individual to be eligible to be an assemblyman from 21 to 18.

During the debate session, Khaidhira Abu Zahar (BN-Rim) lauded the age limit amendment, describing it as progress to involve the younger generation in the country’s politics.

“Barisan Nasional has consistently supported the issue of lowering the voting age. The youths are mature enough to make decisions and, nowadays, they are mature enough to be involved in the policymaking process,” he said.

Kerk Chee Yee (PH-Ayer Keroh) responded to critics of the bill by saying that the move would help nurture democracy in the country.

“Age is not the question. This is more a question of justice. Are we ready to involve young people in the election process?

“So, this is the first step in giving them space in politics and even elections. This is also a process for them to understand democracy,” he said.

The bill was passed with the support of 25 assemblymen, while three members were not present.
