PETALING JAYA:
Kebun-Kebun Bangsar, a community farm on a hillside in Bangsar, has been allowed to continue operations, weeks after it was served with an eviction letter, a PKR MP revealed.

Fahmi Fadzil said he was informed by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) that the land office had approved a temporary occupation licence (TOL) for the 3.4ha farm.

“DBKL has given permission for Kebun-Kebun Bangsar to continue operating, re-listing it in the Local Agenda 21 (LA21),” the Lembah Pantai MP said on Facebook.

He added that Kebun-Kebun Bangsar must comply with the stipulated rules and conditions.

Meanwhile, DBKL confirmed that a TOL was issued by the lands and mines department to Kebun-Kebun Bangsar in a letter dated June 28. It also confirmed in a separate statement that it had agreed to re-list the community farm as a partner of LA21KL.

The farm was informed about the re-listing at the stakeholders meeting today.

Last month, the Federal Territory office of the department of the director-general of lands and mines (JKPTG) had threatened the group running the farm with a RM500,000 fine and a jail term of five years if it failed to comply with an eviction notice.

JKPTG director Muhammad Yasir Yahya said action was taken against the farm as it had violated the terms of the TOL for nurseries.

This included the type of crops grown on the farm and that there should not be any permanent structure built under the electric pylons based on the technical feedback from Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

The farm on Lorong Bukit Pantai began five years ago as a community project. The volunteers grow vegetables, fruits and flowers, which are given to the poor and to soup kitchens.

The project was praised by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who gave the farm a special mention in his World Environmental Day speech.
