Tengku Zafrul ‘unsure’ why summoned by MACC

Former finance minister reiterates he will give his full cooperation.

Former finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz will be called in as part of the anti-graft agency’s probe into the Jana Wibawa programme.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Tengku Zafrul Aziz says he is unsure why he has been summoned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), but says he will give his full cooperation to the agency.

“I can confirm that I have been called by MACC and God willing, I will meet with them as soon as possible,” he told reporters after an event here today.

The international trade and industry minister said he would share more details with the press after he meets with the anti-graft agency.

Yesterday, MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed that Tengku Zafrul, the former finance minister, will be called in as part of the agency’s probe into Jana Wibawa.

Jana Wibawa was a Covid-19 stimulus package for Bumiputera contractors affected by the economic downturn during the pandemic.

Jana Wibawa has been mired in controversy after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the costs involved in some of the projects handed out were too high, and that many had also not gone through a tender process.

On Saturday, Tengku Zafrul said he had nothing to hide should he be summoned for questioning.

“I am prepared to give my statement if required,” he said in an Instagram post.

He was responding to former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s claim that the Jana Wibawa stimulus package had been originally mooted by Tengku Zafrul and was carried out exclusively by the finance ministry.

Muhyiddin also said MACC might call Tengku Zafrul up for questioning as the project had been proposed by the former finance minister.
