Where’s the reformist fuss around Zahid’s discharge, asks Zaid

The former law minister claims a ‘massive demonstration’ would have happened if Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's DNAA had happened under a BN government.

Zaid Ibrahim said ‘noble arguments’ put forward in the trial of Najib Razak about how the legal process must not be abused, among others, were nowhere to be heard in the case of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A “massive demonstration” would have been forthcoming if the discharge granted to Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday had happened under a Barisan Nasional government, said senior lawyer Zaid Ibrahim.

Referring to Zahid as a “VVVIP”, the former law minister ostensibly took aim at the deputy prime minister’s discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in a lengthy rant on Twitter, comparing it to the SRC International trial of Najib Razak last year.

Zaid lamented that the “noble arguments” put up then to justify barring former prime minister Najib from changing his lawyers were nowhere to be heard in Zahid’s case yesterday.

“The narratives were that the justice system would not allow last-minute changes, the process must not be abused, the taxpayers’ money must not be wasted, and that the trial must go on schedule, even without counsel,” he said.

“Yesterday, this sacred idea of justice, ostensibly revered by many in this country, was exposed for all to see for what it is.

“I am sure if this incident had taken place under the BN leadership, there would have been a massive demonstration. Many quarters will ask where the rule of law is and whether the prime minister should resign.

“But since we now have a reformist leader heading the government, ably supported by DAP, you will not hear anyone making a fuss.

“Tell the supporters these unusual events are legacy problems we can solve after the next general election. In the meantime, enjoy the power and perks while we can.”
