KUALA LUMPUR:
The proposed implementation of the diesel subsidy rationalisation announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 2024 budget on Oct 13 was the focus of MPs debating the Supply Bill 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Jimmy Puah (PH-Tebrau) said the implementation of targeted subsidies would help the government save money on enforcement and create a more robust financial ecosystem.

“The bulk subsidy system currently practised is no longer relevant,” he added.

Isam Isa (BN-Tampin) said the government should prioritise finding a solution to stop foreigners from enjoying the petrol and diesel subsidies.

Stricter border controls are also necessary to stop fuel from being smuggled out of the country, he added.

Meanwhile, R Ramanan (PH-Sungai Buloh), in his debate, raised issues related to poverty.

He expressed the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to help those in need and reduce poverty in the country.

“The collaboration of every stakeholder, including MPs, in addressing issues related to the well-being of their communities can end the vicious cycle of poverty.”
