KUALA LUMPUR:
Police have broken up a cannabis smuggling ring and arrested eight people in a series of six raids, following complaints from a courier service that it was being used to transport the drugs, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said.

“The syndicate has been active for the past year and has been utilising guarded luxury condominiums as warehouses and repackaging centres,” Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa told reporters here.

He said the gang was buying 30kg to 100kg of drugs a week through Telegram contacts for RM800-RM1,000/kg, depending on the type of cannabis, which was imported using courier services.

He added that the gang then broke down the shipments and resold the drugs concealed in packets of rabbit food.

Overall, police said they seized 94.9kg of cannabis worth up to RM294,000, along with RM34,000 cash, a motorcycle, rabbit food packaging and tools used to repackage drugs.

He added that the first two raids were carried out on April 18, followed by four subsequent raids on April 23.

Rusdi said five suspects had been remanded until April 29 for trafficking narcotics under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the remaining three had been released.
