More flood victims in Kedah and Johor

Conditions in Perak, Selangor and Melaka show signs of improvement.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The number of flood victims in Kedah and Johor increased as of 8am today, while the situation in three other states is showing signs of improvement.

In Kedah, the number of victims rose to 439 from 305 last night, with all relocated to four temporary relief centres in two districts.

State civil defence force deputy director Suhaimi Zain said there are 252 evacuees in Kubang Pasu and 187 in Pendang.

The irrigation and drainage department said nine rivers in Kedah have exceeded their danger levels, including Sungai Ketil (Baling), Sungai Gurun (Yan), Sungai Titi Kerbau (Pendang) and Sungai Padang Terap (Kepala Batas).

The Malaysian meteorological department (MetMalaysia) has predicted widespread thunderstorms throughout the day in Kedah.

In Johor, state disaster management committee chairman Azmi Rohani said there are 601 evacuees at three relief centres in Kluang, Pontian and Batu Pahat, an increase from 582 last night.

He said the weather conditions are expected to be clear across all 10 districts, but Sungai Sembrong in Batu Pahat remains at the warning level.

In Perak, the number of flood victims remains unchanged, with 297 taking shelter at four relief centres in Kerian, Taiping, and Hilir Perak. MetMalaysia has predicted thunderstorms in all districts this afternoon.

In Selangor, the number of evacuees in Gombak and Kuala Selangor has dropped to 137 from 186 last night. They are putting up at three relief centres.

In Melaka, the number of victims remained at 22, who are housed at the relief centre at SK Tehel, Jasin.
