Lorong Selamat char kuey teow from Penang, now in Subang Jaya

Located at Restoran Rion USJ in the busy USJ 14 commercial area, this offshoot of the original stall in George Town is worth a visit.

A good plate of char kuey teow is not easy to find in the Klang Valley, especially if you’re used to the quality of the fare in Penang.

Thankfully, the prevalence of hawkers from the northern island, coupled with high demand, has meant many of them have migrated or expanded southward.

This is essentially how Lorong Selamat Char Kuey Teow ended up in Subang Jaya, an offshoot of the stall in George Town.

This one is located at Restoran Rion USJ in the busy USJ 14 commercial area, a short walk away from the Wawasan LRT station on the Kelana Jaya line.

Priced at RM8 a plate – cheaper than the version in Penang – the dish comes with all the must-haves: prawns, cockles, chives, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and egg.

Compared with the original, the size of the prawns is smaller here, as they always tend to be in the Klang Valley; and the kuey teow is also on the thinner side.

However, the “wok hei”, or “breath of the work”, is decent, resulting in a competent dish that should satisfy most foodies who want a taste of authentic Penang CKT.

All in all, if you’re hankering for a hot, steaming plate of spicy and flavoursome noodles, this place is worth a visit.
