Johor Sultan gives nod for state assembly sitting

This comes after a meeting with state menteri besar Hasni Mohammad, state secretary Azmi Rohani and state prosecution director Amir Nasruddin.

PETALING JAYA:
The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has given his consent for the state assembly to reconvene on Aug 12.

In a Facebook post, he agreed to officiate the opening of the next session in Kota Iskandar on the same day.

The post also said Sultan Ibrahim made the decision after granting an audience to Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad, state secretary Azmi Rohani and state prosecution director Amir Nasruddin this morning.

The Sultan also wished for all elected representatives to come together to properly establish the state’s economic recovery and action plan to help those affected by the pandemic.

“I feel very sad to see my people living in trouble, fear and anxiety right now.

“I am also disappointed with the fact that to this day, the issue of the spread of the Covid-19 virus has yet to be resolved,” he said.

Sultan Ibrahim had also granted an audience to Johor health director Dr Aman Rabu for an update on the current Covid-19 situation in the state.

Meanwhile, Johor state assembly speaker Suhaizan Kayat told FMT that he had been informed of Sultan Ibrahim’s statement.

“A notice to convene the next state assembly sitting will be issued 21 days before Aug 12, which will give time for the Clerk’s Office to gather all the questions from assemblymen.

“This is the best space for all assemblymen to express their views and discuss the problems of the people, who have been heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Johor is among the eight states moving towards reconvening its state assembly, a move seen as defying the Perikatan Nasional-led government’s stand at the federal level.

The others include Perlis, Selangor, Melaka, Penang, Sabah, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, all of which have either fixed the dates for the sitting or are awaiting consent from their Rulers and governors.
