New govt must recognise 3 main principles, says Tian Chua

Tian Chua proposes principles for the country to move forward as a nation after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation.

Tian Chua says all MPs from parties which won the people’s mandate in GE14 should set aside differences and past squabbles and immediately come together to form a legitimate government.
PETALING JAYA:
With Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin stepping down, the new government must recognise three main principles, says PKR’s Tian Chua.

In a statement, the party’s vice-president said the new administration must revert back to the people’s mandate in order to restore government legitimacy.

“The core of a post-Muhyiddin government must be led by the parties and MPs who won the mandate in the 2018 general election.

“All MPs from the parties which won the people’s mandate should set aside differences and past squabbles and immediately come together for the process of forming a legitimate government,” he said.

Tian Chua also said there was a need to recognise that the practice of exclusion and fragmentation of political rivals was a mistake, adding that inclusivity and consultation were key to ensuring a healthy participatory democracy.

He said the new prime minister should reach out to all political parties to be part of a unity pact that ensured the sharing of power and responsibility as this would create a conducive atmosphere for political stability.

Thirdly, Tian Chua added that the new government should entrust positions of responsibility based on capability and competence.

“There is a need to improve efficiency in the governing institutions in order to effectively combat the deadly pandemic.

“The new administration must abide by the principles of good governance by always operating with transparency, accountability and be free from corruption,” he said.

Tian Chua said the new government’s focus should be on saving lives by strengthening the healthcare system to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also said the reconstruction of the economy and preserving the livelihood of the people suffering extreme hardship and building national unity should be focused too.

“We urge leaders of all political parties to put aside partisan interests and prejudice. Let us start the process of nation-building and restore public confidence immediately,” he said.
