PETALING JAYA:
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) authorities have shut down a forum conducted by graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza on its campus in Bangi this evening.

The forum called “Kelas Demokrasi” started at 5pm with over 200 students estimated to have turned up for the session with the outspoken activist.

However, about 10 minutes in, UKM’s security told the people to disperse and shut down the sound system. Several auxiliary policemen were also present.

It is understood that UKM authorities said the event required a letter of permission to be held on campus.

“The #KelasDemokrasi at UKM has been barred by UKM’s security. The class cannot be continued on campus.

“Instead, we will continue off-campus. The new location is at C&P Coffee Company, Seksyen 1 in Bandar Baru Bangi,” Fahmi said in several Twitter posts.

About 100 students continued to join the forum after it was relocated to the cafe.

“University authorities barring #KelasDemokrasi from being held on UKM’s campus? No problem, we’ll just continue outside of campus. #RakyatAdalahBoss,” Fahmi said in a later posting.

FMT has reached out to UKM for comment over the matter.

Previously, Fahmi had held the forum at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA).
